Learn how to save on cooling costs this summer in Utah.

Many Utah homeowners worry about the summer cooling bill. If you are concerned about your energy costs, you aren’t alone. Depending on the weather, your cooling bill could go up quite a bit in the next few months. Fortunately, there are some things you can do to save on cooling costs. Check out these tips from the cooling experts at Perform Heating & Cooling!

Want to Save on Cooling Costs? Here’s How

According to the EPA, the average American pays around 15 percent of their energy bill in cooling each year. And if the summer is hotter than usual, that number goes up. Here are a few things you can do to keep that bill more reasonable:

1. Make sure your home is properly sealed and well-insulated.

Depending on when your home was built, it may not be sealed properly. For example, if the caulking has degraded around the windows and air can pass through, you will lose cold air and pay more for cooling.

Insulation is important for controlling cooling costs as well. Good insulation keeps your home cooler in summer and warmer in winter.

2. Use a programmable thermostat.

You can go with the newest wi-fi-controlled thermostats, or even just a plain programmable model. It may seem surprising, but a programmable thermostat can save you several hundred dollars a year in energy costs.

We can install a programmable thermostat for you and show you how to use it.

3. Block out the sunshine at the hottest part of the day.

By using shades or curtains to keep the sun from shining into your home, you can significantly reduce how much heat transfers into your house. You don’t have to go totally dark if you don’t want to. Try out different curtains or potted plants to reduce the amount of sun entering the windows.

4. Change the air filter on your HVAC unit at least every 3 months.

It’s important to change your air filter so that your HVAC system can function properly. Once the filter becomes clogged, the unit has to work harder to circulate air through the home. The harder it has to work the more power it uses.

5. Tune-up your HVAC equipment.

We encourage you to consider a tune-up for your air conditioner. Like your car, your AC needs professional attention periodically to ensure it’s running as well as possible. We recommend servicing in spring for the summer heat – but anytime is a good time if it’s been a while.
