Broken furnace in winter.

Winter in Utah can be so cold – the last thing you want to deal with is a broken furnace. Unfortunately, it happens. When you discover that your furnace isn’t working and it’s freezing outside, you need to take steps to address the problem. Here are some of the tips we give our customers when they call with this problem.

Tips to Deal with a Broken Furnace

If your furnace is broken, we encourage you to:

1. Call a furnace repair company as soon as possible.

Your furnace might start working again – but it might not. Modern homes are not designed to hold up to freezing temperatures with no heat. The plumbing can burst, among other catastrophes. That’s why we suggest you contact us immediately.

Furnace repair companies are often busy in the winter months. It might take us some time to get to your home. But the sooner you get on the list, the sooner we can be out there to fix your furnace.

2. Plug in some electric space heaters.

Electric space heaters are a great alternative to your furnace when needed. You can plug them in any room with an outlet and they can produce considerable heat. No, it won’t be as good as your furnace – but it’s way better than sitting in a cold house.

3. Check your breaker box.

Sometimes, a breaker can throw and shut off electricity to your furnace. If that happens, the furnace will no longer turn on and heat the home. This may be what happened to your furnace. Check the breaker box and turn back on the electricity if it is off.

4. Light some candles.

You may be surprised to learn that just one candle can raise the temperature of a room by a full degree. That might not seem like much, but it can make a difference when you have a broken furnace. Lighting multiple candles can make a room more comfortable for you and your family.

5. Bake something.

Your oven can produce a lot of heat. Just cooking something for an hour or so will heat up the kitchen and any open rooms attached to it. And once you are done cooking, you can open the oven door and let the heat out into your home.
