How to Get Your Heater Ready for Winter in Utah

There are some places on earth where people don’t care much about heaters. Utah is not one of them. Our state gets cold. That’s why we take heater maintenance so seriously. Here are some tips on how to get your heater ready for winter this year.

1. Change your air filters regularly.

The air filter on your heater is designed to clean the air as it comes from outside and is pushed throughout your home. Like all filters that are used regularly, heater air filters clog up over time. A clogged filter puts more wear and tear on your heater. It also makes it harder to heat your home. Change it as needed – usually every 3 months or so.

2. Test your thermostat.

Crank your thermostat up high and make sure that your heater turns on. It’s good to do this before the weather gets too cold. If the heater doesn’t turn on or it doesn’t heat up the home as you expect it to, it’s time to call in one of our HVAC pros to troubleshoot the problem.

3. Make sure your vents and registers are clear.

Debris may have blocked your external vents that pull in air from outside. Objects may also be blocking some of your internal registers, the grills where the air comes out into your home. Check all of these inlets and outlets and clear them so the system can work properly.

4. Cover the air conditioner condenser for the winter.

If you have an air conditioner condenser outside, it’s a good idea to cover it up for the winter. The cover will prevent ice from accumulating in the condenser and possibly causing damage.

5. Schedule a maintenance appointment with Perform Heating & Cooling.

This is the most important tip we have to help you get your heater ready for winter. There is only so much you can do on your own. Let us look your HVAC system over and fix any problems now. That way, you will have all the heat you need this winter.
